The Battle of Trenton
The battle of Trenton occured in 1776 on December 25 in Trenton, New Jersey. Washington led 2400 troops in to Trenton after being forced out of New York. The continental army wore blue coats and tri-corner red hats, but the militia were very poorly dressed. Some of the American soldiers that did not have shoes to wear left big traces of blood in the snow as they marched during the battle. The British army was being led by Colonel Rahl. He had gathered fourteen thousand hessian soldiers to come and fight against the patriots with him. The British wore red coats(thats why they were called lobsterbacks) with leather helmets.
Washingtons plan of attack on the British was to go across the Deleware River with men at three points. On force comanded by Lt.col Cadwallader with a Rhode Island regiment with some pennsylavanians, and Deleware militia and two guns to cross the river above Trenton and attack the hessian garrison in the town. The hessians tried to form in the town but were under artillery fire and attack from the front and back. The Americans took the houses and shot all the german gunners and foot soldiers. During this time Colonel Ralh was slightly wounded. His troops retreated to a south east orchard and surrendered.
The Americans had won the war. out of the onethousand five hundred soldiers the British had fighting 906 were captured, 221 killed and 86 wounded. From the twothousand fourhundred soldiers the Americans had 2 were killed. 5 were wounded and none were captured.
The Battle of Princeton
The Battle of Princeton was held in Princeton, New York. The Americans just like at the battle of Trenton were being led by General George Washington and he led seven thousand . The British were now being led by Major Genernal Lord Cornwallis. Much like the battle at Trenton the British wore redcoats and headgear made of bearskin. They also wore caps made of leather or tri-cone hats depending on the weather. The American Continentals wore bluecoats and the militia was very roughly dressed. Both sides were armed with muskets and guns. Between the 29th and 31st of December Washington brought his troops across the river into Trenton.
He recieved news that Lord Cornwallis was at Princeton with 8000 British troops and artillery about to advance on him. He had a major crisis situation when several soldiers enlistments were almost up. It ended at midnight on the 31st of December. Washington ended up persuading the men to stay another six weeks at war. The patriots would then go on and defeat the British again. Out of the 8000 british men 100 were killed, 70 wounded and 280 captured. The americans 7000 only 25 were killed, 40 wounded and none captured.
